Undergraduate degree requirements

In pursuing a bachelor’s of interdisciplinary studies (B.I.S.) in liberal studies for early and elementary education (LSEE), students are guaranteed to receive a top-notch, well-rounded education that will more than adequately prepare them to become a fantastic elementary school teacher. It is important to note that in selecting LSEE as an undergraduate major, students are effectively declaring that they plan to enter in VCU’s Extended Teacher Preparation Program, a 5.5 year (11-semester) program that includes the undergraduate LSEE major and culminates with a master’s of teaching degree. If students graduate after four years with just a B.I.S. in LSEE, they will not be qualified or licensed to be an elementary school teacher. Considering that 39 other states recognize the Virginia state teaching license, it makes sense to stick in this 5.5 year program. The 10 states that do not recognize the Virginia teaching license are Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and North and South Dakota.
